Global Occupational Skill Standard – GOSS ID: GOSS/AD/CART/V1

Eligibility: 10th (High School) or Equivalent or minimum 2 years of relevant experience (experience-based learners can directly enroll and certify).

Objective: The Certified Art Restoration Technician course aims to train students in the techniques, materials, and ethical practices involved in the preservation and restoration of artworks and cultural heritage objects. The program covers the scientific principles behind art materials and deterioration processes, as well as practical skills such as cleaning, repairing, consolidating, and retouching artworks.

Certification: Within 5 days after Completion of Online Assessment.

Steps to become a GSDCI Certified Professional:

Step 1: Select your certification you want to pursue.

Step 2: Click on get certified tab, new pop up window will open.

Step 3: Click on pay certification fee, you will be redirected to billing details page.

Step 4: Fill your details and click on pay certification fee, You will be redirected to payment gateway, pay fee by any available options like Card(Debit/Credit), Wallet, Paytm, Net banking, UPI and Google pay.

Step 5: You will get Login Credentials of Online E-Books and Online assessment link on your email id, within 48 hrs of payment.

Step 6: After completion of online assessment, you can download your Certificate Immediately.

Assessment Modules:

Module 1: Introduction to Art Restoration: History and ethics of art restoration, Types of art and cultural heritage objects, Overview of restoration vs. conservation, Roles and responsibilities of restoration technicians, Understanding the restoration workflow, Documentation and record-keeping in restoration.

Module 2: Materials and Techniques in Art: Properties of common artistic materials (canvas, wood, stone, metal), Types of pigments and binders, Understanding aging and deterioration processes, Techniques for analyzing materials (microscopy, spectroscopy), Introduction to adhesives and consolidants, Environmental factors affecting artwork preservation.

Module 3: Assessment and Diagnosis: Condition assessment protocols, Identifying types of damage and decay, Diagnostic imaging and scientific testing, Sampling and analysis techniques, Risk assessment and prioritization of treatments, Ethical considerations in intervention decisions.

Module 4: Cleaning and Stabilization Methods: Surface cleaning techniques (dry, wet, chemical), Removal of old varnishes and overpaint, Consolidation of fragile surfaces, Techniques for structural stabilization, Use of solvents and cleaning agents safely, Monitoring and controlling environmental conditions during treatment.

Module 5: Restoration Treatments and Techniques: Inpainting and retouching methods, Filling losses and reconstructing missing parts, Techniques for restoring different media (paintings, sculptures, textiles), Use of reversible materials and methods, Final varnishing and protective coatings, Preventive conservation strategies.

Module 6: Practical Application and Professional Practice: Project planning and treatment proposal writing, Workshop safety and handling protocols, Collaboration with conservators and curators, Legal and ethical issues in art restoration, Preparing artworks for display and transportation, Career development and continuing education in restoration.

GSDCI Online Assessment Detail:

  • Duration- 60 minutes.
  • Number of Questions- 30.
  • Number of Questions from each module: 5.
  • Language: English.
  • Exam Type: Multiple Choice Questions.
  • Maximum Marks- 100, Passing Marks- 50%.
  • There is no negative marking in any module.
