Steps to become a GSDCI Certified Professional:

Module 1: Introduction to Trauma-Informed Yoga: Understanding trauma and its impact on the mind, body, and emotions, The physiological and psychological effects of trauma on the nervous system, The core principles of trauma-informed care in Yoga, The role of Yoga in trauma healing and recovery, Creating a safe and inclusive space for trauma survivors, Differentiating between traumatic stress and ordinary stress responses in the body.

Module 2: The Science of Trauma and the Nervous System: The autonomic nervous system: sympathetic and parasympathetic responses, Understanding the fight, flight, freeze, and fawn trauma responses, The role of the vagus nerve in trauma recovery and regulation, Neuroplasticity: How the brain can heal and rewire through Yoga, The effects of chronic trauma on the brain and body (e.g., PTSD, dissociation), The connection between breath, body awareness, and trauma healing.

Module 3: Principles of Trauma-Informed Yoga Practice: Safety, empowerment, and choice as fundamental aspects of trauma-informed Yoga, Encouraging self-regulation and self-awareness through movement, The use of grounded, slow, and gentle movements for trauma survivors, Cultivating mindfulness and presence during Yoga practice, The importance of non-judgmental language and touch (or the absence thereof), Modifying poses to accommodate varying levels of comfort and accessibility.

Module 4: Breathwork and Relaxation Techniques in Trauma Recovery: Using breath to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest), Pranayama practices for calming the nervous system and reducing anxiety, Guided meditations and relaxation techniques for trauma survivors (e.g., Yoga Nidra, body scans), Techniques for promoting emotional regulation through mindful breathing, The importance of slowing down the breath to prevent re-traumatization, Working with students’ personal boundaries around breath and touch.

Module 5: Building Trust, Boundaries, and Connection: Creating a trauma-sensitive and trust-building environment in Yoga classes, Understanding the importance of boundaries in trauma recovery and how to teach them, Approaching students with sensitivity and respect for their personal histories, Navigating the use of touch and physical adjustments in trauma-informed Yoga, Using verbal cues and affirmations to enhance feelings of safety and comfort, Recognizing signs of re-traumatization and how to support students in those moments.

Module 6: Teaching and Practicing Trauma-Informed Yoga: How to structure trauma-informed Yoga classes for different populations (e.g., veterans, abuse survivors, individuals with chronic illness), The importance of pacing, pausing, and offering choices in class design, How to address trauma-related triggers that may arise during practice, The role of community support and connection in trauma recovery, Self-care practices for Yoga instructors working with trauma survivors, Continuing education, supervision, and personal development for trauma-informed Yoga teachers.
