Global Occupational Skill Standard – GOSS ID: GOSS/C/CSMAW/V1

Eligibility: 10+2 (Higher Secondary) or Equivalent.

Duration: Three Months.

Objective: The objective of the Certificate in Shielded Metal Arc Welding course is to provide participants with in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in manual arc welding using a consumable electrode coated in flux. The course covers equipment setup, electrode selection, welding positions, joint types, arc control, safety procedures, and weld inspection.

Steps to become a GSDCI Certified Professional:

Step 1: Select your certification you want to pursue.

Step 2: Click on get certified tab, new pop up window will open.

Step 3: Click on pay certification fee, you will be redirected to billing details page.

Step 4: Fill your details and click on pay certification fee, You will be redirected to payment gateway, pay fee by any available options like Card(Debit/Credit), Wallet, Paytm, Net banking, UPI and Google pay.

Step 5: You will get Login Credentials of Online E-Books and Online assessment link on your email id, within 48 hrs of payment.

Step 6: After completion of the online assessment, the soft copy of your certificate will be sent to your registered email ID within 5 days.

Assessment Modules:

Module 1: Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding: Overview of SMAW process and applications, Roles and responsibilities of a SMAW welder, Comparison with other arc welding processes, Understanding arc generation and polarity, Basic welding terminology, Safety standards in arc welding.

Module 2: Equipment and Electrode Selection: Welding machine types and setup, Electrode classification and selection (E6010, E7018, etc.), Electrode storage and handling, Power source settings and adjustments, Tools and accessories used in SMAW, Equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.

Module 3: Welding Techniques and Joint Preparation: Types of welding joints and positions (flat, vertical, overhead), Surface cleaning and preparation, Striking and maintaining a stable arc, Weaving, stringer, and bead techniques, Controlling arc length and travel speed, Avoiding common technique errors. 

Module 4: Welding on Various Metals and Conditions: Welding of carbon steel and low alloy steel, Welding thick and thin materials, Techniques for vertical and overhead welding, Dealing with root passes and multi-pass welding, Preheating and post-weld treatment, Tack welding and fit-up practices.

Module 5: Quality Assurance and Defect Control: Visual inspection of welds, Common weld defects (slag inclusion, undercut, porosity, cracks), Causes and prevention of defects, Basic non-destructive testing methods, Weld documentation and standards, Repair and rework procedures.

Module 6: Safety and Environmental Practices: Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), Electrical safety precautions, Fire prevention and handling hot work permits, Ventilation and fume control, Proper disposal of electrodes and materials, Emergency response and first aid procedures.

GSDCI Online Assessment Detail:

  • Duration- 60 minutes.
  • Number of Questions- 30.
  • Number of Questions from each module: 5.
  • Language: English.
  • Exam Type: Multiple Choice Questions.
  • Maximum Marks- 100, Passing Marks- 50%.
  • There is no negative marking in any module.
