Global Occupational Skill Standard – GOSS ID: GOSS/JPM/CSDAD/V1

Eligibility: Graduation or Equivalent or minimum 2 years of relevant experience (experience-based learners can directly enroll and certify).

Objective: The Certified Set Designer / Art Director course is designed to train learners in the conceptualization, planning, and execution of visually compelling sets and environments for film, television, theatre, advertising, and live events. The course covers set design principles, spatial planning, color theory, art direction, mood boards, props management, and material selection. Learners will explore the collaborative nature of production design, working closely with directors, cinematographers, costume designers, and lighting teams to bring stories to life through visual space. 

Certification: Within 5 days after Completion of Online Assessment.

Steps to become a GSDCI Certified Professional:

Step 1: Select your certification you want to pursue.

Step 4: Fill your details and click on pay certification fee, You will be redirected to payment gateway, pay fee by any available options like Card(Debit/Credit), Wallet, Paytm, Net banking, UPI and Google pay.

Step 5: You will get Login Credentials of Online E-Books and Online assessment link on your email id, within 48 hrs of payment.

Step 6: After completion of online assessment, you can download your Certificate Immediately.

Assessment Modules:

Module 1: Introduction to Set Design and Art Direction: Understanding the roles of a set designer and art director in film, TV, and theater, Difference between production design, art direction, and set decoration, Overview of the visual storytelling process through sets, Study of genres and their impact on set aesthetics, Understanding the production workflow and design pipeline, Key collaborations with directors, cinematographers, and costume designers.

Module 2: Design Principles and Visual Development: Elements and principles of design applied to sets, Understanding color theory, texture, and composition in environments, Mood boards, style frames, and concept development, Creating thematic and historical accuracy in design, Translating scripts and storyboards into visual concepts, Spatial planning and designing for camera movement.

Module 3: Technical Drawing and Set Construction: Basics of technical drawing, drafting, and model making, Orthographic, isometric, and perspective drawings, Introduction to CAD and 3D design tools (SketchUp, AutoCAD), Understanding scale, proportions, and construction materials, Budgeting and estimating for set builds, Safety regulations and structural integrity in construction.

Module 4: Props, Set Dressing, and Materials: Selecting and sourcing props based on script and character, Designing and managing set dressing for realism and mood, Working with materials (wood, foam, fabric, paint, etc.), Ageing, weathering, and texture techniques, Managing props continuity and breakdowns across scenes, Collaboration with the costume and makeup departments for visual cohesion.

Module 5: Lighting, Color, and Cinematic Integration: Designing sets to support lighting and camera requirements, Enhancing mood and narrative through light and shadow, Working with color palettes aligned with cinematography, Integrating practical lighting into set design, Creating depth and perspective for different lenses and framing, Coordination with VFX for green screen and extended set designs.

Module 6: Production Planning and Portfolio Development: Scheduling set builds and location preparations, Managing design teams, carpenters, and set decorators, Documenting and presenting design concepts to production teams, Preparing final design packs (plans, references, samples), Creating a portfolio with case studies, sketches, and photographs, Presenting set design work professionally for studios and clients.

GSDCI Online Assessment Detail:

  • Duration- 60 minutes.
  • Number of Questions- 30.
  • Number of Questions from each module: 5.
  • Language: English.
  • Exam Type: Multiple Choice Questions.
  • Maximum Marks- 100, Passing Marks- 50%.
  • There is no negative marking in any module.
